If you master your time, you master your life ~ John Salkowski
The one thing you must know as a productive, articulate, precise decision making leader is too never allow anyone to waste your time. I call these people time gremlins. If someone doesn’t respect your precious time, they certainly have no respect for theirs. If there is one thing that you can never get back is your time.
One of the best books I have ever read, and I suggest you pick up your copy today is Dan Kennedy’s No B.S. Time Management for Entrepreneurs. It was a book that I could not put down once picking it up. He states, “The biggest secret of extraordinary personal, financial and entrepreneurial success combined: the use, misuse or abuse by others of your time-the degree to which you achieve peak productivity-will determine your success”.
I just recently had someone attempt to waste my time and if it wasn’t for reading Dan Kennedy’s book, it just might have happened. You must stay away from and be able to detect time gremlins. People that have nothing better to do with their time so they believe they can waste yours. Devaluing your time is the fastest way to disaster in your personal and professional life. If you don’t know what your time is worth how do you expect the world to know it.
You must continue to hone your skills of detecting the time gremlins. If they are affecting your productivity, causing you stress you must rid them of your life. If you say at the end of the day, “I didn’t get much accomplished”, it’s your own fault. You should never and I mean never allow someone to use your time, time you will never get back in a wasteful way.
Here are some tips to help you manage your time and rid the time gremlins from your life:
1) Turn off your phone when you are being productive. Don’t allow a phone call that is irrelevant to what you are doing interrupt your momentum and productivity
2) Turn off your email alert. If you are working on your computer, stop jumping from what you are doing to answer emails. You are losing valuable time and money
3) Go to a place that you won’t be bothered. If this isn’t possible, lock your office door and ignore any and all things that try to disrupt you.
4) Set your timer on your watch for certain interruptions. Such as drink water, eat lunch, go to the bathroom, and answer voice mails and/or emails.
5) The most important of all is to build your skill of detecting the time gremlins. Don’t allow anyone or anything affect your productivity. The only way to success is being productive on the things that matter the most in your life.
